Husk Distillery has celebrated yesterday’s National Rum Day with the launch of The Lost Blend, as limited release of just 761 numbered bottles of Husk Cultivated Australian Rum.
What makes the rum so rare is that it is a blend that can never be reproduced, as the distillery explained.
“In 2017, when Cyclone Debbie wreaked havoc across Queensland and Northern NSW, Husk Farm Distillery was faced with rising floodwaters.
“The distillery and barrel house were inundated by three metres of water and the handwritten distillation notes for two barrels filled in 2014 were destroyed.
“With these production records, the fermentation histories and distillation cuts were lost forever. The vestiges of that history are nonetheless captured in every bottle of The Lost Blend.”
This farm-to-bottle rum was made with sugarcane grown at Husk Farm, with Founder Paul Messenger and local Tweed Valley farmer Anthony Chiesa hand cutting and crushing whole cane sticks to produce this subtropical rum, a blend of barrels from 2014, 2015 and 2016.
Aged in American oak, The Lost Blend is a complex rum with tasting notes that say it “keeps on giving once poured into the glass, where bright sweet notes of lemon sorbet meet the aged, caramelised oak aromas”.
This release will be available from a select network of bottle shops, the Husk Cellar Door and online. Online customers can sign up to access the release at the Husk Distillery website.
