Hitting the ‘better for you’ trend in your venue

With the shackles of winter well and truly banished, the sun, shorts and sunscreen are coming out as Aussies prepare to hit the beach.

Summer also traditionally brings more of a shift towards increased health consciousness, which is magnified by general trends showing Australians are becoming much more mindful of what they are putting into their bodies.

Awareness of the dangers of too much sugar in our diets has been building for some time, in addition to an increasing preference for high quality, natural ingredients. Consumers are also reducing in the amount of alcohol they consume – one-in-four Australians claim to have done so recently and data shows that per capita consumption of alcohol in Australia to be at a 50-year low.

Premiumisation – a big trend in our industry – plays a role in all these trends. Consumers are choosing to drink less, but they willing to spend more on quality. This is across the board, from the growth in craft beer to the rise of craft spirits.

One product that hits the no sugar, better for you and premium trifecta is Remedy Kombucha, with the brand enjoying on-premise growth with consumers actively looking for the brand on their night out.

Remedy Co Founder Emmet Condon explains what is behind the success of Remedy Kombucha, which has seen the brand claim 60 per cent market share in Australia, with no signs of slowing.

“People are actively seeking out foods and drinks that are better for their own health, but the reality is, healthy options often aren’t as tasty! Remedy fills a massive gap, offering a better alternative to without the sugar or fake ingredients, without compromising on taste,” Condon said.

“Remedy Kombucha is made the traditional way, using top notch natural ingredients. Our old school long-aged small batch fermentation process leaves no sugar, naturally and creates a great depth of flavour.”

“It’s therefore a great option for bars, pubs and clubs to offer both as a non-alcoholic option and as a better-for-you cocktail mixer. Craft spirits are all the rage. Remedy is the perfect craft mixer to go with them!”

In a recent report Nielsen highlighted the rise in mindful drinking and reduction in alcohol intake in Australia.

They said: “As with any category or industry, change doesn’t mean that a revenue stream has evaporated. For liquor manufacturers, bars and restaurants that don’t adapt to shifting ‘mindful drinking’ preferences, the outlook will be far less bright. Near-beers, premium soft drinks, mocktails, low- and non-alcoholic options, kombuchas and botanical tinctures all offer a wealth of opportunity to experiment with and promote to consumers.”

It’s worth noting that when it comes to kombucha, not all brands are created equal and consumers are also highly brand aware. One of Remedy’s key consumer insights from recent research was that more and more consumers are asking for Remedy Kombucha to be more readily available in pubs, bars and clubs.

“Every day, we hear comments in person or via our social media along the lines of ‘it’s great that I can now find Remedy in so many places to take home, or enjoy in a café, but I wish I could order more it when I am out socialising’. We’re super keen to fill that gap and really pumped to be working with more venue operators to make it happen.”
