Music rights management bodies PPCA and APRA AMCOS have this week launched a single-licence online portal – OneMusic Australia.
‘Pre-mixing’ the rights in the song, the recording and the music video, OneMusic will serve up a read-to-consume product that hoteliers have been asking for, for many decades.
No longer will venues have to grapple with two separate organisations licensing the music they have playing in their various bars, dance floor areas bottle shops and bistros, a scenario that has been around for many decades.
Venues who have been good music citizens and secured a licence from one or both organisations will need to switch over to OneMusic a month before their current agreement lapses, a process that will be rolled out over 12 months. Several hundred venues whose licence would have been due for renewal in September have already been given advance notice of the need to switch.
For unlicensed new owners or new enterprises with little knowledge of music licensing they should look forward to a phone call or a letter from OneMusic’s customer service team to make sure a licence is in place. This ensures a level playing field for commercial music users, all taking part equitably in the stimulation of the music economy.
Licensing transactions can also take place online, with admin access available for financial controllers and venue managers. Live chat, phone and personal support will also be available to assist pubs in getting to know the new system and what music use applies to their venue.
The scheme has been created in full consultation with industry such as the Australian Hotels Association and pubs, bars, taverns, saloons, lounges, hotels, casinos, taprooms, cellar doors, motels, resorts, guest houses, B&Bs and hostels.
The user-pays offering provides 10 music use options to add to a ‘shopping cart’ of music licence cover. Venues can opt to have cover if they have background music, featured recorded music, live and recorded music performances, recorded music for dance use as well as cover for music played in specific areas such as function spaces and hotel and bar dining areas as well as on websites, in Karaoke events and cover for streamed music through digital delivery/copying.
Small venues with a single radio or television entertaining patrons need only budget for $130 a year for music licence fees and this allows them to also have telephone on hold music.
For the first time an All-Inclusive package is offered to suit the needs of large-scale venues.
The introduction of the OneMusic initiative coincides with a deeper understanding by Australian hospitality businesses that the right, commercially-popular music played for the benefit of customers and staff can support their brand and reputation at the same time as boost their bottom line.
