42BELOW has revealed 21 Australian and 21 New Zealand finalists in its sustainable cocktail showcase, who will now battle it out to win the “eco-trip of a lifetime” to Bali.
The 42 finalists demonstrated their commitment to sustainability with a variety of creative cocktails. Ideas included reducing, reusing and recycling regular cocktail ingredients; using ingredients that would normally be tossed after service; upcycling fruits; using old donuts, and giving a second life to spent coffee grinds.
“They’re all winners in our mind, but now, the Top 42 finalists start their journey to become one of 42BELOW’s Top 4 Australian and New Zealand sustainable bartenders,” said 42BELOW ‘Vodka Professor’ Jacob Briars.
The 42 finalists must now be reduced to just four and will be judged on the following criteria: sustainability (is it genuinely doing good, through planet-friendly practices?); creativity (inspiration, visually appealing, name, taste?); and popularity.
The final element, popularity, will see consumers and trade voting for their favourite cocktails via the 42BELOW Facebook or Instagram pages, ahead of two Australian and two New Zealand winners being announced on 8 February 2019.
The deserving four will partake in a sustainability-focused trip to Bali, shipped off on a carbon-offset flight for a ‘Tour de Trash’ with Gringgo – a start-up that is disrupting the waste sector in the fight against ocean plastic.
