Sydney’s Oxford Street nightclub, Carousel, has been listed in Nightlife International’s global top 100 clubs, becoming the first Australian venue to feature on the list.
Carousel was ranked number 87, with more than 50,000 patrons visiting since it’s opening only a year ago.
Kerry Wallace, Owner and Director of Carousel, shared the exciting achievement.
“We’re stoked to be the first Australian club in history to make the top 100 rankings. Sydney genuinely feels like it is entering a new era of nightlife. We’re proud to be playing a role in putting Sydney back on the map as a destination where there is not only an actual clubbing scene, but an award-winning venue that rivals nightlife meccas like Fabric, Berghain and Pacha,” said Kerry.
Carousel offers patrons a modern club experience, with electric dance music and affordable beverages, as well as operating hours running from 10pm until 5am.
The venue has become a popular destination for international artists and dance music. Over the last year the venue has seen performers like Raresh, DJ Masda, Booka Shade, Youandewan, Vintage Culture, Rich NxT, Fred P, Traumer, Sully, Jasper James, Dan Shake, Patrick Holland, as well as much loved local celebrities like Troye Sivan, Stacie Fields, Memphis LK, Tangela, Barney Kato, Bella Claxton.
Carousel’s recognition comes at no better time, with the New South Wales government recently announcing its latest 10-year music strategy with hopes to boost Sydney’s nightlife. Mick Gibb, CEO of Night Time Industries Association (NTIA) believes that Carousel helps establish Australia as a nightlife destination.
“Carousel’s inclusion in the Top 100 Clubs list is a reflection of the enormous amount of work they have put into creating a world-class venue. They are helping put Australia’s night-time economy on the global stage, it’s vital their contributions are recognised and their cultural significance protected and cherished,” he said.
“Looking ahead, Australia is set to become an even larger hub for dance music and nightlife, with SoundCloud just recently reporting that Australians listen to more dance music per capita than any country in the world.”
With Carousel’s placement on Nightlife International’s listing, Kerry hopes to encourage the future of Sydney’s nightlife and see an ease in restrictions against the nightclub scene.
“The various bodies who are assisting venues with issues, including the Office of the 24-Hour Economy Commissioner, NTIA, in addition to the new Vibrancy Reforms, will hopefully see the entire CBD become a thriving Special Entertainment Precinct, protected from petty noise complaints,” said Kerry.
Pacha in Ibiza, Fabric in London and Berghain in Berlin were among other clubs listed on Nightlife International’s Top 100 list. Being among the world’s most renowned international clubs, Carousel has placed Sydney on the map as a top contender in the global dance culture.
