Young Henrys celebrates 10 years with special beer

Young Henrys 10 Years Strong Red Ale can with birthday cake

Newtown-based brewery, Young Henrys, has released ’10 Years Strong’, a barrel-aged red ale to celebrate its 10th birthday.

Young Henrys brewery has been ‘serving the people’ from its Newtown home for more than a decade now.

The independent brewery first started operating back in 2012, when it was founded by Richard Adamson and Oscar McMahon. To celebrate the milestone, Young Henrys has released a limited edition strong red ale, which was aged in a combination of rum and Port wine casks.

This maturation has given the beer a deep flavour profile, with notes of oak, dark fruits, subtle hoppy bitterness and treacle, alongside a ruby red hue. Weighing in at eight per cent, this beer certainly packs a punch.

A can of this beer will be given away to customers whenever they buy any two six or four packs from Young Henrys standard range.

2022 is a significant year for the brewery, as it also marks 10 years since Young Henrys first produced two of its most loved beers: Natural Lager (the brewery’s oldest beer) and Newtowner, brewed to honour 150 years of since the formation of Sydney’s Newtown suburb.

Over the past decade, the brewery has had a positive impact beyond the world of beer, partnering with nearby UTS to launch the Algae Project, a sustainability initiative that sees the brewery producing micro-algae to both release oxygen, and to be used as a livestock feed supplement to reduce methane emissions. Young Henrys has also crowdfunded solar panels on its Newtown roof, which entirely power the brewery.

Young Henrys has supported the local music, arts and sports scenes, partnering with the likes of Hockey Dad, Dylan Alcott and the South Sydney Rabbitohs on events and beers.

In a statement to press, directors Richard, Oscar and Dan Hampton said: “So here we are, 10 Years Young.”

“A decade of late nights and dim lights, of fun and of friends, of mis-steps and mistakes, of loud music and unforgettable experiences. It’s been tough, joyous, emotional, hilarious and never boring, and what more can you ask from a decade of your existence?”

“We are absolutely thankful to be standing exactly where we are today. To our wonderful crew, to all of our customers/mates, to all of the bands, artists, festivals, the whole YH extended family and to you, the person holding this can of Barrel Aged Red Ale, you have all helped Young Henrys become 10 Years Strong, and we thank you.”

Young Henrys 10 Years Strong is available on tap at certain select venues.
