Sugarcane Sunday will land in Sydney again on Sunday 14 April, and for the first time, will be preceded by an entire week of rum events held around the city.
Some of Sydney’s best cocktail bars will host a selection of rum masterclasses and competitions – and will of course be shaking up delicious rum cocktails – all week long.
The festivities will kick off on Monday 8 April with the monthly meeting of the Sydney Rum Club, which will be meeting at Brix Distillers to talk about the influence sugarcane has on rum production.
Tuesday will see a Daiquiri Towers event take over Burrow Bar; Wednesday a Rum 101 Masterclass also held at Brix; Thursday a ‘Sailor’s Rum Supper’ at Peg Leg Tavern in Pyrmont; Friday a Pina Colada masterclass at Jacoby’s and a Saturday Swizzle at Lobo Plantation on the week’s penultimate evening.
This all leads up to the crescendo on Sunday. For those who might’ve missed it last year, Sugarcane Sunday is all about increasing your knowledge of the wonderful world of rum – and plenty of tastings.
“Rum often gets a bad rep in Australia, yet around the world it’s known as the fun island spirit of the Caribbean and the tropics,” says founder of Sugarcane Sundays and director of The Rum Club Australia, Tom Bulmer.
“Rums carry the pride and culture of each island nation that makes these high quality spirits. This is what we want to remind Sydney and Australia about.”
There will be two sessions in the ‘rum market’ set up in Macquarie Place Park over the course of the day (Afternoon Session 1pm-4pm and Evening Session 5pm-8pm), and a variety of ticketing options – click through for more details.
