Will this be the summer of the grapefruit cocktail?

With its pastel-pink colour, delightful garnish and tall glass the Paloma is a cocktail that appears to have been made for social media, but that’s not the only reason to think about making sure it’s on your cocktail menu this summer.

A recent survey of Google Trends in the US found that the most-searched cocktail recipes in California during lockdown was the Paloma. And it’s often been shown that when it comes to global drink trends where Los Angeles leads, the rest of the world follows.

But why is the Paloma so popular, and why should you pour them this summer?

Joseph Chisholm, Patrón Tequila Brand Ambassador, told Bars and Clubs: “Citrus has always been a favourite when it comes to both food and beverage flavouring, but this is the year of the grapefruit. Consumers tend to lean towards bold flavours and grapefruit helps spice up a beverage without the added calories.

“I recommended using fresh grapefruit whenever possible. When squeezing the fruit, natural oils come out of the peel (the zest) and create a more natural and aromatic flavour, as opposed to the overly sweet taste that may come from artificial products.

“The Patrón Paloma’s appeal is the simplicity, it is a refreshing beverage for when you don’t want to skimp on complexity. Although the exact origins of the Paloma can be debated, the flavour is what draws people back to enjoy it over and over. The beverage seems to capture sweet, sour, salty, and a touch bitter. And, unlike a margarita, it has that effervescence from the bubbles. Who can resist a cocktail with bubbles?

“The simple recipe is an easy swap for Gin & Tonic which is quick to make when the bar is busy. It also adds a refreshing twist and is seen as a more of a cocktail to customers seeking a new favourite tipple.”

The grassy sweetness of tequila, the zesty bitterness of grapefruit, the thirst-quenching fizz of soda all combine to make the Paloma one of the world’s best long drinks.
