Award-winning Singapore bar 28 HongKong Street is celebrating its 10th birthday by joining Proof & Company in launching a year of celebrations both in Singapore and around the world.
While global celebrations are not really what they once were, for now, the concept works with bars around the world collaborating and serving at least one classic 28 HongKong Street cocktail on their menu through November. So while we can’t travel to the bar to celebrate, we can still celebrate this amazing venue.
28 HongKong Street has been an integral part of the development of Singapore’s world-leading cocktail culture, the bar was placed ninth in the recently announced Top 500 Bars, amazingly one of four Singaporean bars to place in the top 10.
That status has seen other world-renowned bars join in the birthday celebrations with Sydney’s Maybe Sammy being joined by London’s Swift, Barcelona-based Two Schmucks, New York’s Attaboy, PDT and Katana Kitten and 2021’s Best Bar in India, Sidecar. The celebrations will see each bar feature a 28 HongKong Street ‘Greatest Hits’ cocktail on their menu for a limited period.
Drinks including Hittin’ Switches (a cocktail from 2017 featuring Plantation Original Dark Rum, Italian bitter, passionfruit, coffee, lime, spiced cacao bitters, and overproof rum), The Fixie (a mix of Terai Gin,
Mancino Bianco Vermouth, green apple, basil, honey and black pepper from 2013) or Literate Lass (previously found on a 2008 menu using Michter’s Rye Whiskey, port, amaro and dandelion bitters) will feature as specials across the international bars’ menus for the duration of the celebrations, which will run until 30 November.
28 HongKong Street has been an influential part of many lives and has been a jumping-off point for countless industry personalities in Singapore’s cocktail scene and around the world. To further commemorate the bar and this anniversary, 28 HongKong Street has commissioned leading local agency The Hummingbird Co. to create a mini documentary film. Serving as a love letter and a visual poem, the film invites friends, family, and imbibers down memory lane for another nostalgic treat.
Past employees, bartenders and members of the nightlife industry who have played a pivotal part in the growth of the bar, including Jessica ‘Hutch’ Hutchinson from No Sleep Club; Michael Callahan from Barbary Coast; Desiree ‘Desi’ Jane Silva from Sago House; and co-founders of 28 HongKong Street and Proof & Company, Spencer
Forhart, Paul Gabie and Snehal Patel, have each taken part in this documentary to tell the story of these 10 years and how 28 has become what it is today.
The film is now available on 28 HongKong Street and Proof & Company’s social channels.
As well as the limited-edition international menu takeover and film, the 28 team are planning a series of parties, tropical pop-ups, international take-overs, and a travelling road show which will take place over the next 12 months to keep the celebrations running throughout the bar’s 10th year.
