Newtown cocktail bar Earl’s Juke Joint teamed up with Bondi’s famed Icebergs Dining Room and Bar over the weekend in an exclusive bar takeover. The collaboration was the third in Icebergs pop-up bar series Winter Sundays, bringing some of Sydney’s best known drinking institutions to the beachside suburb of Bondi.
In celebration of its 20-year anniversary, Icebergs Dining Room and Bar has invited familiar faces from Double Deuce Lounge, Maybe Sammy, Earl’s Juke Joint and Shady Pines to jump behind the bar for a guest shift while the sun sets.
Hidden behind the façade of an old butcher’s shop, Earl’s Juke Joint’s speakeasy cocktail bar is situated on King Street. Bringing a taste of Newtown to the newly renovated Bondi venue, Inner West bartenders Kiaran Bryant and Fredrik J.L served up four of their signature cocktails.
The fruity California Soul cocktail combined Don Julio Blanco, Ilegal Mezcal, Cointreau, citrus and chili, topped off with an ancho chili salt rim, while the vibrant Notorious OMG paired vodka, Aperol, citrus raspberry and whites. Death or Glory featured Tanqueray gin, Fino Sherry, citrus, rockmelon, orange bitters and grapefruit zest, and finally the Wattleseed Boulevardier combined Bulleit Rye, Campari, sweet vermouth, wattle seed and orange zest.
Alongside Kiaran and Fredrik’s creations, Icebergs bartenders crafted three of their signature serves, the Margarita Rosa, Americano Angeletti and a classic Negroni.
Complementing the drinks offering was a menu of New Orleans inspired snacks in collaboration with Icebergs head chef Alex Prichard. Made up of American classics, the menu comprised Nashville hot chicken with sex panther spice and ranch, hot dogs, mac and cheese, terzini salad and fries, paired with a banoffee pie.
Rounding out the Winter Sundays pop up series is Darlinghurst’s Nashville-style honkytonk Shady Pines Saloon, heading to the coast on Sunday 3 September for the final sunset takeover.
