After COVID-delays, Volcan De Mi Tierra, a premium single-distillery Tequila, was ‘officially’ launched last month at Villa Biscaya in Sydney’s Rose Bay.
Volcan De Mi Tierra, which roughly translates as ‘Volcano Of My Homeland’, takes its inspiration from the volcanic soil of Jalisco, Mexico.
This soil, which was enriched by the eruption of the Tequila volcano some 200,000 years ago, is perfect for the cultivation of the blue weber agave which is distilled to produce this spirit. The volcano has been inactive since this eruption.
Indeed, Volcan Tequila is made using 100 per cent blue weber agave grown in the Lowland and Highland region of Jalisco, known as Las Regiones Valles y Altos. Volcan is one of few Tequila brands to have its own family-run distillery, which itself is located at the foot of the volcano.
Volcan has been developed through a partnership between the Gallardo family (previously involved in the production of premium Tequila brands, 1800 and Centenario) and Moët Hennessy, and is the latter’s first ever foray into the agave spirit.
Volcan initially entered Australia in November, 2021, but pandemic disruption meant that Moët Hennessy was unable to give the brand an official launch.
As such, the brand celebrated its arrival into the Australian market on March 31 with a small gathering at the Villa Biscaya, a Spanish Mission Hacienda-style property in Sydney’s Rose Bay. Here a menu of Mexican-inspired seafood dishes and Volcan cocktails were served, while the appearance of a Mariachi band was an entertainment highlight.
Julien Morel, CEO of Volcan De Mi Tierra, said the expansion of the Tequila category was a motivating factor for Moet-Hennessy when entering the market.
“Tequila is one of the fastest growing spirit categories, with continuous premiumisation of the offer.”
“After a successful introduction in the US and Mexico, we are thrilled to bring Volcan De Mi Tierra to new territories and demonstrate what Tequila is capable to offer in terms of taste, craft and quality,” Morel added.
Two expressions are now available in Australia: Blanco – an unaged Tequila made with agave from a variety of terroirs, and Cristalino – a clear añejo Tequila that has been finished in whisky and Cognac casks, before being charcoal filtered to remove colour.
This process gives the spirit the body and depth of a reposado or añejo, but the colour of a blanco Tequila. Volcan suggest enjoying this spirit neat or over ice, but the cocktail potentials of such a characterful clear Tequila are considerable.
Volcan’s Chief Operating Officer, Santiago Cortina Gallardo, explains that the product is the result of several years’ trial and error.
“Over the last five years, we have been in test, learn and grow mode, working to expand our capabilities and capacity at Volcan’s very own distillery.”
“Throughout the process we have continuously refined our craft and have ultimately produced three world-class expressions [Santiago is referring also to Volcan’s Reposado, not yet available in Australia].”
And for Santiago, it is the provenance and connection to the land that makes Volcan Tequila unique.
“Volcan de mi Tierra is not only a Tequila, it is the creation of a unique profile, enhancing all the nuances from each region.”
“We look forward to further sharing Volcan De Mi Tierra with the world,” he concluded.
Volcan De Mi Tierra Blanco and Cristalino retail for between $105 and $160, and are available in select bottleshops, or through contacting your local Moët Hennessy representative.
