Tales of the Cocktail Foundation (TOTCF) has announced the appointment of Sandrae Lawrence to its Board of Directors, marking a significant addition as the organisation continues its mission to Educate, Advance, and Support the global drinks industry.
Sandrae, a well-respected journalist, publisher, and advocate for the cocktail community, brings a wealth of experience in spirits media, mentorship, and global cocktail culture. Her expertise will help shape the Foundation’s programs and initiatives, strengthening its role in supporting bartenders, bar owners, and the wider drinks industry.
In addition to her new role, Sandrae is the editor, publisher, and co-founder of The Cocktail Lovers, the acclaimed magazine, podcast, and online resource for drinks professionals and enthusiasts. Launched in 2008 as a passion project alongside her husband, Gary Sharpen, The Cocktail Lovers has since grown into a leading voice in the industry. The publication was recently honored as Best Cocktail & Spirits Publication at the 2024 Tales of the Cocktail Spirited Awards.
“It’s an absolute honour and privilege to be on the board of the Tales of the Cocktail Foundation, a foundation that genuinely exists to serve, strengthen, and support the global drinks community,” said Sandrae.
“I look forward to drawing on my insights from a journalist’s perspective to ascertain what bartenders, bar owners, and brands are looking for – particularly in the current climate – in order to continue the Foundation’s mission to elevate the entire beverage industry.”
Sandrae’s career spans multiple creative industries, including fashion PR, music promotion, and journalism. Her writing has appeared in The Daily Telegraph, Sunday Mirror, The London Evening Standard, and The Independent, covering lifestyle, fashion, travel, and food.
Beyond her editorial work, she is a dedicated industry mentor and a frequent judge for prestigious cocktail competitions such as Diageo World Class, Havana Club Cocktail Maestros, and PATRÓN Perfectionists. She also serves on the advisory board of the Ada Coleman Project, is a founding advisor for the Pernod Ricard SIP Global advocacy program, and mentors through Equal Measures and the OurWhisky Foundation. In 2021, she was inducted into Tales Catalyst (formerly the Tales of the Cocktail Dame Hall of Fame), recognising her contributions to the industry.
“I have had the privilege of working across various industries, including fashion, music, photography, and film, yet none have proven to be as inspiring, dynamic, fulfilling, or inclusive as the drinks industry,” said Sandrae. “This is my opportunity to give back to an industry that has given me so much.”
Neal Bodenheimer, Co-Chair of the Board of Directors, highlighted Sandrae’s impact.
“Sandrae Lawrence has had a remarkable influence on the global drinks industry through her work as a journalist and advocate,” said Neal.
“Her ability to tell the stories about our industry with authenticity and passion makes her an invaluable addition to the Board, and I am confident that she will be a driving force as we shape the future of the Foundation.”
Eileen Wayner, CEO of TOTCF, added: “This transition marks an important milestone for the Foundation as we continue to build a governance structure that reflects our mission and values. We welcome Sandrae Lawrence to the Tales of the Cocktail Foundation Board, confident that her fresh perspectives and deep industry expertise will help guide our ongoing commitment to education, advancement, and support of the global drinks community.”
With Sandrae’s appointment, Tales of the Cocktail Foundation strengthens its leadership team and reinforces its dedication to championing the people and businesses that drive the cocktail industry forward.
