The Sydney suburb of Paddington has welcomed a new secret speakeasy bar, La Prima, concealed by a hidden door and designed to transport guests straight to Oaxaca, Mexico.

Bringing an intimate and exclusive experience to an already popular venue, the new speakeasy is tucked away inside Mexican cocktail bar El Primo Sanchez.

La Prima will expand on the Mexican offering of El Primo Sanchez, with a focus on tequila, mezcal, and playful takes on Mexican classics. Adding a new layer of intrigue to the well-established venue, La Prima is open by invite only, or for those lucky enough to stumble upon it.

Once inside the 10-seater, 20-standing bar, guests will be looked after by a dedicated female bartender with a rotating menu of cocktails curated by the Maybe Sammy team.

From the opening menu, guests can expect to try the Encanto, made with Patrón Silver, dry vermouth and cherry soda, the Perfume de Gardenias featuring Patrón Reposado, peach and citrus cordial and jasmine soda, and finally, the Pastel de Planto which features Patrón Reposado, banana and cinnamon cordial, salt and agave.

Complementing the Mexican-inspired menu, the candlelit bar pays homage to its roots with old school Mexican music and agave-themed décor.

Inside La Prima, guests will also have the option to order select offerings from the food menu at El Primo Sanchez, which has been curated by Head Chef Alejandro Huerta. Putting his own spin on Mexican classics, favourites from Alejandro’s menu include the guacamole with fermented green tomato, chili crunch and totopos, pink ling with baja base and pineapple pico de gallo, and the blackmore wagyu barbacca with salsa roja de miso.
