What’s an acceptable tip? We’re not talking percentage here, we’re taking format.
An online debate has been heating up on TikTok after a user in the US posted a clip as her brother wanted to leave a $25 Amazon gift card as a tip following dinner in a restaurant.
Kaitlyn Lombera from California, aka @kaittwest, posted the video with the caption “He asked if he could tip with a Amazon gift card [sic].”
The bill was over $95, so the gift card represents a tip of over 28 per cent, but speaking to Fox News recently Kaitlyn said when they asked the waiter if he would take the tip, he just laughed so they ended up tipping on their credit card instead.
The video has now been viewed over 500,000 times and has attracted thousands of comments, with opinion split on whether it is acceptable to tip with a gift card.
One user wrote: “I’m a bartender. I would have loved that as a tip!!!” while another added “Bartender here I would totally appreciate that if was a legit gift card. That’s 16 jars of pickled Jalapenos delivered to my door.”
While others were less enthusiastic, one writing “I didn’t know Amazon cards payed (sic) rent now. Yes he didn’t have to get her anything but let’s not pretend like it’s not customary.” Another user said “Would you be OK with your job giving you an Amazon gift card instead of a paycheck?”
