Bombay Sapphire, a Gordon & MacPhail single malt, as well as two Aussie gins – Tasmania’s Poltergeist Gin and West Winds Gin The Broadside from Margaret River – have all won Double Gold medals at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition in recent days.
Double Gold at the SFWSC is awarded to a spirit that receives a gold medal from every judge in its class, and is the highest accolade at the influential awards.
Bombay Sapphire, one of the world’s most recognisable gins, once again received a Double Gold at the SFWSC.
Gordon & MacPhail’s Rare Vintage Glen Grant 1954 single malt also received the highest accolade.
The single malt is described as a “beautifully full bodied, after dinner dram, matured in a first fill sherry cask and bursting with fruity aromas and flavours.”
David King, Gordon & MacPhail International Sales Director, said: “Receiving these awards from some of the industry’s most influential experts is testament to our expertise in the selection of the finest casks for whisky maturation, and acknowledgement of the hard work and dedication of everyone at Gordon & MacPhail.”
Poltergeist Gin- Unfiltered, produced by Shene Estate & Distillery near Hobart, also won Double Gold. The gin is known for its big nose and huge, complex flavour, and the way the liquid clouds when poured over ice.
Head distiller Damian Mackey was thrilled when he received the news, saying: “It’s the first double gold for a Tasmanian Gin and a real feather in our cap, but more importantly, it’s a confidence boost for the Shene Team.
“We’re in the process of expanding our operations, and a Double Gold at San Francisco shows us that we’re on the right track.”
Another Australian gin received the top honour at the awards: West Winds Gin’s salty and brazen Navy Strength offering ‘The Broadside’, which was also recently awarded The Champion Gin at the 2017 ADA Awards.
West Winds distiller Jason Chan said: “It’s extremely rewarding to be recognised as a world class gin in a sea of amazing distilleries and styles. And what’s even more amazing is to think that our distillery in Margaret River, tucked away in the south west corner of Western Australia, can consistently produce world class gins.”
Launched in 2000, the San Francisco World Spirits Competition is now one of the most influential competitions on the spirits calendar; scored by leading figures across the industry, each sample is blind-tasted without producer or price information being revealed.
